Civil Rights Throw Rugs, 2011
Decommissioned fire hose and trim
32 x 38 inches, 81 x 96.5 centimeters
Part of the excitement of my vocation is taking the rich and sometimes complicated cultural histories of our country and providing new routes for re-investing in these histories. The Civil Rights Throw Rugs is an opportunity to continue my work of asking questions about the catalytic value of the Civil Rights Movement and whether its become a domesticated experience, void of active and present political engagement. Has that moment become simply table talk and who are the political and cultural workers that continue to make case for the need for civil liberty. What is the relationship between Civil Rights, class advancement in the country and the blight and disinvestment in poor places? The discontinued fire hose, for this moment, acts as a token of disinvestment, past potency and an ugly reminder of the new opportunities created for some but not all." Theaster Gates
