- Susan Collins Produces Limited Edition Artworks in Honor of the Armory Show -
New York, January 7, 2010 - The Armory Show has commissioned British artist Susan Collis to provide images as part of the visual identity for the 2010 fair and to produce special editions to benefit the Pat Hearn and Colin de Land Cancer Foundation and the Pat Hearn and Colin de Land Acquisition Fund for The Museum of Modern Art.
Collis is known for meticulous facsimiles of mundane objects that force viewers to reconsider details they may have initially missed. In The Devil you know, what appears to be an accidental white splatter turns out to be a painstaking drawing of the negative space around the splatter shape; No show looks like an ordinary screw and three holes on a wall, but the seemingly nondescript screw is silver with a white diamond inset, and the holes are inlaid precious stones: a black diamond, garnet and black quartz; and in and so on, the stains marking the surface of the soiled rag have been hand-woven into the linen fabric.
Collis is represented by SEVENTEEN, London, and has exhibited in the United States, Paris, Spain, Israel and throughout the United Kingdom. The Pat Hearn and Colin de Land Cancer Foundation is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide assistance for medical expenses to members of the visual arts community suffering from cancer. Financial grants are need-based and distributed to cover the costs of medical services, including standard conventional care, unconventional and experimental therapies, palliative care, home care and hospice care. Recipients can use the grants for aspects of care that are usually not fully reimbursed by insurance such as massage therapy, nutritional counseling, herbal and nutritional supplements, acupuncture and psychotherapy; funds can also be used for transportation needs to medical appointments and to help with co-pays and insurance deductibles. Further information about the foundation and details on how to make a contribution are available at www.phcdl.org.
This year, The Armory Show's opening preview and party benefits the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition programming; Lead Benefactor and Benefactor-level donors will receive prints for their contributions. More details are available here: www.moma.org/armoryshow2010. The Pat Hearn and Colin de Land Acquisition Fund at The Museum of Modern Art helps the museum acquire works in all media by unrecognized artists. Established in 2000 in Pat Hearn's honor and later renamed in both her and Colin de Land's name, this fund follows the guiding principle that Hearn and de Land embraced in their gallery programs, a commitment to new art that lies at the heart of The Armory Show. To learn more about the fund or to make a gift, please contact Emmett S. Watson at The Museum of Modern Art at 212.708.9404, or email emmett_watson@moma.org.
The Armory Show introduced its distinguished annual artist commission in 2002 and began publishing a series of editions in 2006. Contributing artists include John Wesley (2006), Pipilotti Rist (2007), Mary Heilmann and John Waters (2008), and Ewan Gibbs (2009).
