Solo Exhibitions Stand out at The Armory Show 2010
– Whitney Biennial participants and historical presentations
round out the highlights –

New York, February 16, 2010 – 289 international galleries are gearing up for the 12th edition of The Armory Show with presentations ranging from contemporary works exclusively made for the fair to museum-quality historical presentations. One notable trend this year is the large number of booths devoted to single artist exhibitions.

Noteworthy solo shows on Pier 94 include Kris Martin's installation Summit at Sies + Höke (Dusseldorf ), Tjebbe Beekman at Galerie Diana Stigter (Amsterdam), Shirana Shahbazi at The Breeder (Athens), Hilary Harnischfeger at Rachel Uffner (New York), Blair Thurman at frank elbaz (Paris), James Nares at Paul Kasmin (New York), Susan Hefuna at Galerie Grita Insam (Vienna), and David Brooks at Museum 52 (London, New York). Canada (New York) will present Xylor Jane and launch a new book on the artist that showcases her production over the last 3 years, and Ronald Feldman Fine Arts (New York) will present Nancy Chunn's large-scale installation of paintings Chicken Little and the Culture of Fear (2004-2010). David Zwirner (New York) will feature 100 Polaroid photographs by Philip-Lorca diCorcia, and the artist will sign catalogues at the booth on Saturday, March 6th, 3-4 pm.

Many of the participants in the new Armory Focus:Berlin section will also feature solo exhibitions. Among them, Sven Johne at Klemm’s, Monika Baer at Galerie Barbara Weiss, Valérie Favre at Barbara Thumm, Ida Ekblad at Galerie Giti Nourbakhsch, Wolfgang Betke at Aurel Scheibler, and Iris Schomaker at Galerie Thomas Schulte.

The trend continues at The Armory Show – Modern on Pier 92 with a number of museum-quality historical exhibitions, including solo shows of Giorgio Morandi at G.A.M. Galleria d'Arte Maggiore (Bologna) and Niki de Saint Phalle at Nohra Haime Gallery (New York).

This March The Armory Show coincides with the Whitney Museum’s Biennial, and several galleries are exhibiting works by artists in the museum show. Among them, Pierogi (Brooklyn) will show Dawn Clements, Tanya Leighton Gallery (Berlin) will present Sharon Hayes, Hoet Bekaert Gallery (Gent) and Ibid Projects (London) will show David Adamo, Derek Eller Gallery (New York) and Lauren Gitlen (Small A Projects) (New York) will feature Jessica Jackson Hutchins, 303 Gallery (New York) will show Maureen Gallace, Valerie Carberry Gallery (Chicago) will show Jim Lutes, Elizabeth Dee Gallery will show Josephine Meckseper, and Kavi Gupta Gallery (Chicago) will present two artists, Theaster Gates and Curtis Mann. From biennials around the world, Pierogi will show Kim Jones, slated to take part in the Sydney Biennial, Barbara Wien (Berlin) will present Korean artist Haegue Yang, who was featured in the Korean Pavilion at the most recent Venice Biennale, and Fredericks & Freiser (New York) is showing Mary Reid Kelley, who will take part in the upcoming Site Santa Fe Biennial.

Other highlights on Pier 94 include the US premiere of Hans Op de Beeck's latest video piece, Staging Silence, at Galerie Ron Mandos (Amsterdam); Michael Stevenson (Cape Town) will present Meschac Gaba's installation Colours of Cotonou, which will include a special performance in which visitors can have their nails painted during the Vernissage on Opening Day; Layr Wuestenhagen (Vienna), will be showing Mimed, a solo presentation by Julien Bismuth featuring a series of mimed works to be performed daily at their booth by renowned mime artist Gregg Goldston, a disciple and collaborator of the late Marcel Marceau; and more than 75 collaborative "exquisite corpse" drawings by 160 artists, architects, designers and photographers curated by David Salle at Armitage Gone! Dance (New York).

High spots on Pier 92 include important historical Latin American masterworks at Mary Anne Martin Fine Art (New York), Cecilia de Torres (New York), Sicardi Gallery (Houston) and Faria Fabregas Galería (Caracas), and Adler + Conkright Fine Art (New York) will feature Gran Mural (1967-1973), a major Jesus Rafael Soto installation. 20th century American modernist work will also have a strong presence at the modern wing this year, with exhibitors Hollis Taggart Galleries (New York), Bernard Goldberg Fine Arts (New York), McCormick Gallery (Chicago), Vincent Vallarino Fine Art (New York), Richard Norton Gallery (Chicago) joining last year's exhibitors Meredith Ward Fine Art (New York), DC Moore Gallery (New York), Michael Rosenfeld Gallery (New York), Hirschl & Adler Modern (New York), James Graham & Sons Gallery (New York) and Spanierman Gallery (New York). Also of note, Knoedler & Company (New York) will show fifteen paintings by Catherine Murphy accompanied by a catalogue, and Galerie Maeght (Paris) will dedicate their booth to a one man show of works by Aki Kuroda, also accompanied by a catalogue.
