- New York City’s Art Communities Come Together for Armory Arts Week -
A different local art neighborhood highlighted each night of the week

New York, March 1, 2010 – For the past 12 years, artists, galleries, collectors, critics and curators from all over the world have made New York their destination during Armory Arts Week. In celebration of the city’s unparalleled artistic communities, The Armory Show highlights a neighborhood or borough’s arts scene each night of the week with public events including receptions, open studios, art tours, museum discounts, performances, panels, artist discussions and parties.

A high point of the week will again be Lower East Side Sunday on March 7th, focusing on one of Manhattan’s most important emerging art scenes. The New Museum will act as a hub for the day’s activities, including self-guided walking tours and gallery crawls conducted by art professionals Aaron Thompson, Pearl Albino, Rita de Alencar Pinto and Heather Hubbs. Speaking of last year’s Lower East Sunday, Simon Preston of Simon Preston Gallery said, “It was the most traffic the neighborhood had seen yet. We are excited for the attention and business Armory Arts Week will undoubtedly bring to the galleries." Shuttle buses sponsored by the New Museum will also ferry visitors to and from the museum and The Armory Show Friday through Sunday, from noon to 7 pm, allowing access to the fair and to “Skin Fruit Skin Fruit: Selections from the Dakis Joannou Collection" curated by Jeff Koons.

Other highlights of this year’s Armory Arts Week include talks by the MTA’s Arts for Transit staff discussing art at different stations by Al Held, Janet Zweig and Edward del Rosario, Ellen Harvey, Ben Snead and Ming Fay; SoHo Night, an evening of extended exhibition viewing and special programs by the nonprofit art institutions in the neighborhood, including apexart, Art in General, Artists Space, CITYarts, The Drawing Center, Harvestworks, Location One, the Rennee and Chaim Groos Foundation and the Swiss INSITUTE; a walking tour of the High Line led by curator Lauren Ross; children’s tours of Chelsea galleries led by nonprofit organization No Longer Empty; several opening receptions and open studios in Long Island City; and galleries open after hours in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
