- Second Edition of Armory Focus to feature Latin American Countries -
New York, November 30, 2010 The Armory Show is delighted to announce that the second edition of Armory Focus will turn its attention to Latin America. This invitation-only component of The Armory Show, Armory Focus: Latin America features the pick of galleries from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela.
Armory Focus premiered in 2010 with Armory Focus: Berlin where an expertly selected group of that citys best established and emerging galleries was presented with great success, garnering extensive media coverage and achieving strong sales.
Armory Focus: Latin America continues The Armory Shows mission to provide an annual platform for one of the worlds thriving arts communities at the international art calendars most important gathering of artists, dealers and collectors. The decision to showcase Latin America is in recognition of the regions increasing importance on the global art scene and of the vital presence its many cultures have in New York City.
New York City has long been a great center of Latin American art," says Katelijne De Backer, Armory Show Executive Director. While countless Latin American artists are represented by the citys galleries, there hasnt yet been a strong presence here of galleries from the region. Armory Focus: Latin America will change this at a stroke: bringing attention to this vital force in the citys art scene, and also turning a spotlight on the many important local institutions hiding in plain sight."
Amongst the galleries participating in Armory Focus: Latin America are Galeria Isabel Aninat(Santiago), Galeria Baro (São Paulo), Caja Blanca (Mexico City), Casa Triângulo (São Paulo), Faría Fábregas Galería (Caracas), A Gentil Carioca (Rio de Janeiro), Galeriá Lucía de la Puente (Lima), Galeria Leme (São Paulo), Ignacio Liprandi (Buenos Aires), Revolver (Lima), Casas Riegner Gallery (Bogotá), Nara Roelser (São Paulo), Galeria Vermelho (São Paulo), and Mendes Wood(São Paulo). The full list of participating galleries will be released once it is finalized.
In addition, The Armory Shows main contemporary section will include the following Latin American galleries: Luciana Brito Galeria (São Paulo), Gonzalez y Gonzalez (Santiago), and Nina Menocal (Mexico City). The Armory Shows modern section will feature important historical Latin American works presented by the following U.S. galleries: Adler & Conkright Fine Art, Cecilia de Torres, Ltd., Nohra Haime Gallery, Mary-Anne Martin Fine Art, Sicardi Gallery, Tasende Gallery, and Leon Tovar Gallery.
To coincide with Armory Focus: Latin America, The Armory Show is expanding the range of Latin American-themed events in its citywide and VIP program, and has commissioned Mexican artist Gabriel Kuri to create the visual identity for the 2011 fair. Kuris work, which will be showcased in the fairs catalogue, combines the commonplace detritus of everyday life in unexpectedly poetic juxtapositions. It sets the aesthetic for the fairs entire look, and will be featured in all its advertising and marketing materials.
Armory Focus: Latin America is sponsored by the ACE HOTEL NEW YORK.
