Ulterior Gallery is an emerging art gallery on the Lower East Side of New York City. Established in June 2016 by Takako Tanabe, Ulterior is committed to the exhibition of works by an intergenerational array of artists of diverse cultures and backgrounds. As the name of the gallery suggests, Ulterior’s focus is on artists and art that explore states of essential in-betweenness, beyond borders, boundaries, and categories.
Among the artists Ulterior has worked are Maryam Amiryani, George Bolster, Camel Collective, Douglas Goldberg, Takashi Kunitani, Zai Nomura, Mamie Tinkler, Gaku Tsutaja, Carrie Yamaoka, and Minoru Yoshida.
Exhibitions that Ulterior has produced at the current location of 172 Attorney Street have been reviewed by a number of magazines and newspapers, including: The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, Glasstire, 美術手帖(Bijutsu Techo), Art Asia Pacific, The Brooklyn Rail, artnet news, and OCULA. Ulterior also actively participates in art fairs internationally, and has exhibited at the Armory Show, Material Art Fair in Mexico City, NADA Miami, Dallas Art Fair, among others. In fall 2021, Ulterior will participate in the Armory Show, Art Collaboration Kyoto, and Dallas Art Fair.
