Josh Lilley opened in the historical London neighbourhood of Fitzrovia in May 2009. In 2020, after 90 exhibitions, the gallery expanded into adjoining premises to double its exhibition space, viewing rooms and street facade. The gallery mission promotes transatlantic exchange, bringing international artists to the UK for the first time and introducing British artists in the United States. Continuing a legacy of important debut exhibitions including Derek Fordjour, Analia Saban, Aliza Nisenbaum, Kathleen Ryan, Brian Bress and Alex Da Corte, 2020-2021 programming includes the UK solo debuts for Martine Gutierrez, Celeste Rapone and Rachel Maclean. Among the recent and upcoming highlights for the British artists in the programme are Ryan Mosley’s participation in the major painting-referendum exhibition Radical Figures at the Whitechapel Gallery, London; Gareth Cadwallader’s participation in the upcoming new British painting survey at the Hayward Gallery, London; Nick Goss' survey at Pallant House, Chichester; and a scholarly exhibition at the gallery of never-before-seen work from the 1970s by Patrick Caulfield.
