Vielmetter Los Angeles was established in 2000 to present work by artists from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds, many of whom are engaged in rigorously conceptual practices. The gallery's program is international in scope and represents an equal number of male and female artists. In 2018, the gallery expanded to present museum-level exhibitions, moving from Culver City to Downtown Los Angeles.

Vielmetter Los Angeles presented the first solo exhibitions of Rodney McMillian, Edgar Arceneaux, Ruben Ochoa, Tam Van Tran, Steve Roden, and Wangechi Mutu, as well as the first Los Angeles solo exhibitions of Amy Sillman, Mickalene Thomas and Sadie Benning. The gallery has been instrumental in developing the careers of Nicole Eisenman, Charles Gaines, Wangechi Mutu, Rodney McMillian, and Andrea Bowers to their current level of international importance. Recent additions to the program include Math Bass and Sarah Cain.
