Project Description

In this new series of drawings, "Future Ancestors", Phoebe Boswell takes her encounter with a group of deep sea fishermen on the island of Zanzibar as inspiration to imagine a timeless, generational journey in search of a new place. As the artist greeted the men on the shores of the Indian Ocean, as they landed back on land, laden with equipment, weapons, and protection from the elements, proud of their catch, weatherbeaten, exhausted, stoic, heroic, she imagined the new place they may have found, a place of freedom, a place to dream, a place to create future histories. In broken Swahili, she posed a question to them that Kenyan writer Keguro Macharia has pinned to their Twitter account, a question the artist thinks about constantly: How will you practice freedom today? An answer she is given: I will organize my people.
