About the Artist

Taus Makhacheva (b. 1983 Moscow, Russia) is known predominantly for her performance and video works that critically examine what happens when different cultures and traditions come into contact with one another. Having grown up in Moscow with cultural origins in the Caucasus region of Dagestan, her artistic practice is informed by this personal connection with the co-existing worlds of pre and post Sovietisation. Oftentimes humorous, her works attempt to test the resilience of images, objects and bodies in today’s world. In most of her performance-based works, she analyzes “the body as a supporting structure”, repeatedly challenged in off limits situations. The artist's alter ego ‘Super Taus’, engages with her ancestral home of Dagestan, using strength to create provocative and ironic pieces. Makhacheva has shown at 2nd Yinchuan, 11th Shanghai and Sharjah Biennials. Most recently she has exhibited her acclaimed video Tightrope at 57th Venice Biennale in 2017 and presented a new commission at 10th Liverpool Biennale. Makhacheva's works are part of the collections of Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou and Art Gallery of Ontario among others.
