Curator's Statement

Schweder and Shelley explore a balance of dependencies—on each other’s patience, communications, movements, and body weight—in their latest work of performance architecture, My Turn. The spin of the wheel-cum-room spatializes the give and take of interpersonal dynamics. Each turn begs the question: how might one’s personal gain directly impact others?

About the Artist

Alex Schweder and Ward Shelley (b. 1970 in New York, NY and b. 1950 in Auburn, NY) met while Rome Prize fellows at the American Academy in 2005. After this year-long residency, they began a series of collaborative projects that combine architecture and performance. Schweder and Shelley typically design, build, and inhabit radical structures that provoke adaptive social behaviors. Such explorations of social interrelatedness include Counterweight Roommate (MoMA collection, 2015), The Newcomers (Performa 17), Your Turn (currently on view at the Aldrich Museum), ReActor (currently on view at Art Omi), In Orbit (Pierogi Boiler, 2014), Stability (Lawrimore Project, 2009) and Flatland (Sculpture Center, 2007). Their projects have been funded by the Pollock Krasner Foundation and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. Alex Schweder is represented by Edward Cella Art and Architecture, Los Angeles. Ward Shelley is represented by Pierogi, New York.
