Curator's Statement

Elmgreen & Dragset (b. 1961 in Copenhagen, Denmar and b. 1969 in Trondheim, Norway) solidify in bronze ideas of “force majeure,” the term used in contracts for unforeseeable circumstances (riot, war, or “act of god”) that release parties from obligation. Here, the toppled black crates forebode something more ominous than an art fair insurance claim. Like dominos, their fall suggests the collapse of a larger power, whether within art world hierarchies, or beyond.

About the Artist

Michael Elmgreen (b. 1961 in Copenhagen, Denmark) and Ingar Dragset (b. 1969 in Trondheim, Norway) have worked as the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset since the mid-1990s. In their sculptures, installations and performances, they re-interpret the familiar and quotidian with socio-critical humor and subversive wit. From their sensational installation of a Prada boutique in the Texas desert to their contributions to the Danish and Nordic Pavilions at the Venice Biennale 2009, to their conception for an ostensible art fair in Beijing in 2015, Elmgreen & Dragset constantly devise new possibilities in art presentation and reception and for the use of public spaces.
